La Taverne - Taverne du Château de, nestled in the heart of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, offers an exceptional dining experience that perfectly complements a day of exploring the iconic Château de Castelnaud. This charming restaurant brings together the rustic allure of French countryside cuisine with breathtaking views that stretch over the Dordogne valley, making every meal feel like a celebration of both flavor and scenery.
The menu is thoughtfully curated to showcase fresh, local produce with dishes that delight the senses. Guests consistently rave about the crisp, vibrant salads bursting with garden-fresh ingredients, as well as the tender, sweet crepes that provide a comforting yet indulgent treat. Whether you’re warming up with a rich, velvety hot chocolate or savoring a robust coffee, each sip feels like an invitation to unwind and savor the moment. The atmosphere is refreshingly relaxed, enhanced by the warm, attentive service that has drawn praise from visitors—Peter Cackett’s note about the "beautiful terrasse" and "really friendly staff" perfectly captures the welcoming spirit that defines this dining spot.
Dining at La Taverne is more than just a meal; it’s part of the castle experience. Guests appreciate the seamless blend of historic ambiance and natural beauty, where every corner offers superb views and a chance to breathe in the timeless charm of the region. Even minor hiccups—like a forgotten salad that was quickly rectified with heartfelt apologies and complimentary coffees—highlight the restaurant's genuine commitment to guest satisfaction and authenticity, virtues often lost in more commercial settings.
While some visitors have noted that drinks could be served colder and that prices reflect the prime location, these are understandable given the unique vantage point and high-quality ingredients sourced locally. The genuine local hospitality and quality of produce more than justify the experience.
For families, La Taverne offers a variety of approachable dishes ideal for younger diners, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the feast alongside stunning vistas. Environmentally conscious visitors may appreciate the hope expressed by some that the establishment will soon transition away from plastic straws—a small step that reflects broader commitment to sustainability.
In summary, La Taverne - Taverne du Château de is a delightful refuge for anyone seeking a relaxed yet refined lunch or light meal after exploring one of France’s most romantic castles. It is a place where the freshest local flavors meet heartfelt service and panoramic views, creating memories as vibrant as the food on your plate.

This location is amazing. Right after the castle viewing you'll end up here. It's a nice clean place and staff is local and friendly. Drink I ordered could have been could been colder and it was a bit expensive here. But nothing I didn't expect from a location like this.

Beautiful located next to the castle with superb views over the valley. Very friendly staff. The coffee and hot coco were so good. The crepes and salad were lovely. My salad was forgotten and delivered later, but they apologised and offered us complementary coffees. That's service you don't see anymore these days, well done. So when you visit the castle I can absolutely recommend a visit at this restaurant for a coffee or a bite.

A lovely place with a nice view and good food! Unfortunately they still give plastic straws Let's hope it's the end of the stock and that they'll soon be replaced by something more sustainable
